If you want to avoid the hubbub of Newport and Jamestown but still take advantage of the area's many attractions, a stopover at Portsmouth and Melville is a splendid alternative; you'll be just a short drive away from the action.

Anchorages & Dockage

Melville, is a former military fueling facility located on the west shore of Rhode Island, east of Dyer Island and is about 7 miles north of Newport.

The approach is easily manageable as there is deep water all along the East Passage leading to the area. The principal destinations for boaters here are the marinas located in several basins, Hinckley Yacht Services and Hunt Yachts, and East Passage Yachting Center in the basin at Coggeshall Point, just north of Melville. New England Boatworks can also take care of repair needs. Since there are no moorings or anchorages in these areas, call ahead for transient dockage.

From the south and Newport, head west into the East Passage and stay west of Rose Island to avoid hazards on the east side. Aim for the center span of the Clarborne Pell Bridge. Soon, the breakwater of the Naval Basin will become apparent (a restricted area). Once past this area, proceed along the main channel until you are abreast the boat basins.
